Virtual Care Navigator

The Development of a Virtual Care Navigator for Mental Health: Connecting the Community Though Technology and Innovation

Research Summary

This research project, operating out of Algoma University, is a multi-disciplinary initiative that includes faculty expertise from the Departments of Psychology, Biology, and the School of Computer Science and Technology. We aim to develop a website to connect community members from the Algoma District with up-to-date mental health resources through a Virtual Care Navigator (VCN).

More details

The overarching goal of this initiative is to utilize a mixed methods design to inform the development of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) -driven website tailored to the specific needs and demographics of the community. The VCN is envisioned to provide real-time information on mental health services and resources within the community.

This pilot study will employ mixed methodologies, including online content analysis, analysis of existing community mental health data, and semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders such as service providers, community mental health leaders, teachers, and medical professionals. Through these methods, user profiles & scenarios will be created to inform the development of the application and guide its design.

The project recognizes the unique challenges of implementing a VCN in a northern community with limited resources. By exploring potential facilitators and barriers through data gathered from stakeholders, we aim to develop a nuanced understanding of the local context. To guide development and implementation the research team has partnered with the North-Eastern Ontario (NEO) Health Hub, an organization dedicated to bridging the gap between research and implementation.

Ultimately, the research project strives to contribute to the improvement of mental health services in the Algoma District by creating a tailored digital solution that addresses the specific needs of its residents. The integration of insights from Psychology, Biology, and Computer Science emphasizes a holistic approach to mental health and aims to bridge gaps in accessibility to resources within the community.
